Scaffolding Advice Centre

Getting scaffolding erected at your property doesn't have to be stressful. Below we cover the questions we hear most often from homeowners across Hull and East Yorkshire — from preparing your property to choosing the right scaffolding company.

How to prepare your property for scaffolding

Before the scaffold team arrives, there are a few things worth doing to make the process smooth and protect your property:

  • Clear vehicles from the driveway or immediately outside the property

  • Move any garden furniture, pots or fragile items away from the building line

  • Let your neighbours know the day before — the scaffold crew arriving early can be surprising if they're not expecting it

  • Confirm the scaffold erection date with your contractor so they're not delayed waiting for access

Chimney repair — what you need to know

Chimney repairs are one of the most common reasons homeowners in East Yorkshire need scaffolding. Chimneys take the worst of the weather — particularly salt-air on the coast and frost damage in winter. Here's what to expect:

  • An independent chimney scaffold is usually the right solution — it doesn't require the whole house to be scaffolded

  • The scaffold is typically up within two to three hours

  • Your roofer or bricklayer can start work the same day

  • Don't delay chimney repairs — small mortar failures become expensive structural problems

How to choose the right scaffolding company

  • Ask for proof of insurance — any reputable scaffolder should provide this without hesitation

  • Check for CISRS qualifications — this is the industry standard for trained scaffolders in the UK

  • Get at least two quotes and compare like for like — cheapest isn't always best when safety is involved

  • Ask how long the scaffold will be in place and what the cost is if the job overruns

  • Check Google reviews from other local homeowners

Scaffolding safety tips for homeowners

  • Do not allow children to play on or around scaffolding structures

  • Keep the base of the scaffold clear — materials or waste left underneath can be a trip hazard

  • If you notice any part of the scaffold has been disturbed or looks unstable, contact us immediately on 07860 735018 before allowing work to continue

  • Do not use the scaffold yourself unless you have been specifically authorised to do so by the scaffolding contractor
